“Livelihood Support Program”
Objectives
Poverty in Pakistan is a growing concern. It is the root cause of many socio-economic issues. It can trap people in inescapable circles and could lead to frustration and despair. Nearly one-quarter of the population is classified poor as of October 2006 by World Bank.

The Livelihood Support program was born out of Trakker’s desire to develop and expand a framework of cooperation between The Citizen Foundation and The Hunar Foundation to provide employment opportunities to under-privileged students to improve their economic conditions and equip them with technical skills, thus making them contributing members of society.

Details of the Project
As a first step, a curriculum was designed by Technical department at Trakker, which was based on a three month training program, including one month classroom training at TCF premises and two months on-the-job training at Trakker Technical Workshop.

The next step was to select the right candidate for this program. The Trakker team conducted interviews of seventy TCF students who opted for this program. Out of those seventy students, sixteen were selected for the Classroom training.

Implementation
All sixteen students were given one month classroom training at TCF school premises in which basic electronics, quality assurance and technical subjects were covered. During the training, students were periodically evaluated to ensure the effectiveness of training. At the end of the training, a final evaluation test was conducted which was successfully cleared by all students. After the completion of classroom training, all sixteen students were placed as apprentices at Trakker Technical department.

The second phase of this training program was on-the-job training at Trakker premises for two months. During this phase, all apprentices were given a chance to work at various sections of technical department such as Quality Assurance, C-track Repair center and Supply chain management.

Results
At the end of the two month OJT, nine out sixteen apprentices successfully cleared the evaluation criteria and were given permanent employment in Technical department as Technicians. This was only the first group of TCF students who were given employment at Trakker. Trakker requires about sixty technicians per annum and more TCF students will be given employment opportunities in the near future.
